September 11, 2001 is a day this nation will never forget. Sacrifice is a word that comes to mind regarding this day. The sacrifice of individuals, the sacrifice of families, and even the sacrifice dogs made in helping their companions.
Search and Rescue
Thousands of first responders showed up on the scene. Included were the dogs trained to sniff out victims and alert their handlers. These dogs were able to "see" what people could not. If it weren't for them, who knows how many additional lives would have been taken.
Police dogs were also present. Using their training to detect living bodies through the rubble and fire.
We also can't forget to thank the veterinarians for their hard work caring for the animals that took care of victims. Vets were on the scene at the towers cleaning out dogs' eyes, noses, and paw pads. The dogs would not have been able to perform their duties without this!
Not only were dogs important the day of, they have been forever important thereafter. Patients spend time with the therapy dog one on one to destress. It is proven that spending time with animals lowers anxiety and improves mental health. Both victims and responders have benefitted from therapy dogs.
