Let Them Eat Carob!

Posted on
Everyone knows chocolate is a no-go for pups. The chemical in chocolate, Theobromine, is toxic to a dogs’ health causing upset stomach or even death. Thankfully, there are tons of treat options safe for your dog to consume without feeling left out during dessert!
Seedless watermelon is a great treat for dogs. Watermelon is 92% water, making it perfect for keeping dogs hydrated during the summer. It is low in calories and rich in vitamins, just avoid the rinds!
Strawberries are another secretly healthy dessert for your pet! Ensuring you use fresh strawberries over canned or frozen, strawberries are sweet and can even whiten your dogs teeth. Cut the fruit up small or mash it into a pureé to help with digestion, weight management, and aging!
One option I recently learned and experimented with was Carob. You are probably asking, what is this bizarre sounding word? Carob is a chocolate substitute safe for dogs! The difference between Carob and cocoa is that Carob is a legume that does not contain any caffeine or that pesky Theobromine. It is a Mediterranean evergreen tree in the pea family.
Carob is sweet tasting and is rich in certain vitamins, calcium, magnesium, potassium, manganese, and protein. Carob can help fight toxins in your body due to the presence of fiber and pectin.
This ingredient can be melted, powdered, or made into chips to be added to your favorite dishes. Carob can be found in most health food aisles in the market or at specific health food stores.
I found Carob at my local Whole Foods. I was curious about this healthy chocolate substitute and wanted to try out different recipes. When I opened the bag, I was skeptical. I popped a few in my mouth and was very pleasantly surprised at the taste. It was exactly like cocoa chocolate! I grabbed the bag just to double check that I really did buy Carob instead of chocolate that is how similar the taste was.
I cannot wait to test out the taste on my friends’ dogs and see how they respond! Have you ever tried Carob with your pup?
