October 4th is World Animal Day! What does this holiday mean to you? Are you dedicated to the welfare of your pets? Is donating to an endangered animal fund more your thing? Maybe you volunteer or take trips to actually visit certain animals.
The German writer and publisher of "Man and Dog" magazine, Heinrich Zimmermann, started World Animal Day on March 24 in 1925. He wanted his passion for animals to travel around the globe! He eventually gained a following in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Czechoslovakia. In 1931, at the world's animal protection organization in Florence, Italy, Zimmermann proposed October 4th become World Animal Day, which was unanimously accepted.
In present time, the purpose of World Animal Day is very similar to that of Zimmermann. World Animal Day pledges "to raise the status of animals in order to improve welfare standards around the globe." There are countless ways to make a difference for animals. Donating, taking action, or simply making a pledge to care will make a huge difference for animals everywhere!
